Our main objective in G2 math is to continue to build on the foundation laid in grade one: the four basic operations of arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Here we want to increase that proficiency and ability.
The summer break between grade one and grade two tends to “wipe out” more of what was learned the previous year than perhaps any other transition in the elementary math curriculum.
For this reason we start off grade two math with a brief, three-week unit in which we review grade one: addition and subtraction.
This three week unit is crammed full of review lessons from grade one. But these review lessons are not hard, necessarily, for the student. Especially if he has been through the grade one course, which is also based on Ray’s New Primary Arithmetic.
Some of the video lessons in these first three weeks are longer than those in the remainder of grade two. But, again, since they are not “new” material for returning students from grade one, they should not be difficult. (If they are, then all the more reason to review Lessons I through XXXVII in the book.)

The course includes a complete unit on Multiplication, one on Division, one on Math Signs (+, -, ×, ÷) and one on Weights and Measures.
Like Grade 1 Math, there is not a lot of writing. At this stage, children are still in the manipulative/mental stages of learning math. Abstract thinking, in terms of doing math exclusively with figures and signs and symbols, is still in its early development. So, they will only be writing answers to the problems occasionally. Right now, the focus is still on training them to do math MENTALLY. This ability will serve them well throughout their school years… and beyond.
